OCTOBER UPDATE: Having tested a flexcell 27w sunboard for the past 6-8 months, Krafty has found his motorhome battery has coped with sustained use during tours of duty away from usual luxuries of electric hook ups. There have been no issus restricting the family watching dvd's (via one or more of the lcd screens) and re-charging games consoles, or using inverters to run laptops, and when it's been cooler of an evening, the lights have been on inside too.  Not only that, it's on the roof permanently and in a conveniently flat spot, and has been walked on with no ill effects. Trying to locate it somewhere safe from straying kit or where no-one treads would have been very tricky, or seriously limited the kit stowage potential. Flexcell Sunboard is excellent for motorhome use, especially for people who require repeated access to their roof space, and also who do not wish to rely on electric hookups for their power supply.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Cool

Flexcell is a Swiss company that manufactures ultra thin, highly flexible and lightweight photovoltaic (PV) cells & modules, using its proprietary Very-High-Frequency plasma technology to deposit thin layers of amorphous silicon onto plastic substrates.

Flexcell (VHF-Technologies SA) is a Swiss company founded in 2000 at the Ecole d'Ingénieurs du Canton de Neuchâtel by three forward-thinking scientists and entrepreneurs, passionate about renewable energy and skilled in plasma deposition processes of amorphous silicon.

Over the past few years, Flexcell has evolved from a technology start-up to a leading-edge technology company in the photovoltaic (PV) industry.

The company manufactures flexible, thin and lightweight photovoltaic modules, using its proprietary Very-High-Frequency plasma technology to deposit thin layers of amorphous silicon onto plastic substrates.

Owing to its highly flexible PV foil, flexcell is able to deliver innovative solar consumer products (e.g. rollable battery chargers) and to provide integration solutions for the building industry (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) and industrial OEM markets.

The Company received the "Eco-Trophy" from the city of Lausanne in 2004 and the "CTI-Start-up" Award from the Swiss Federal Department of Economy in 2000 as acknowledgement of its leading position in the innovation and industrialisation of renewable energies.

Flexcell manufactures light, thin and flexible PV cells, using a proprietary thin film coating technology developed in the laboratories of the Institute for Micro-Technology (“IMT”) at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

With the aim to achieve significantly lower production costs, Flexcell has industrialised the process to deposit a single amorphous silicon layer on low cost plastic substrates.

The key characteristics of Flexcell’s products opens up a wide range of applications where aesthetic or cost effective customised integration is required.

 highly flexible
The true mechanical flexibility of Flexcell's PV modules allows for the integration with elements of various shapes and sizes and the design of innovative solar products.

 customised & integratable
The roll-to-roll manufacturing processes allow for the production of PV modules of various lengths and widths, thus rendering the technology very attractive for customised integrated solutions.

 thin & lightweight
The lightness of Flexcell’s PV foil makes it suitable for applications where weight is important.
Flexcell's very thin PV foil enables the aesthetic integration with various different materials.

 unbreakable
Unlike conventional crystalline silicon PV modules, which are based on bulky and brittle glass substrates, Flexcell's PV modules are made of thin and flexible polymers, which are tough, durable and safe to use.

 environmentally friendly
In addition to these unique properties, Flexcell's PV foil is environmentally friendly. The electricity produced is clean and the manufacturing processes is based on abundant, recyclable materials. The energy payback of our product is 3-5 times faster than products based on conventional PV technologies.

Flexcell sponsor people/ projects whose vision and actions are aligned with Flexcell's, and windsurfing is a good example where participants harness the power of nature and turn that power into something that is worthwhile, having fun. As such, Ian is 'stoked' to be using a 27W Sunboard to keep the batteries charged on his motorhome during his forthcoming tour of UK and overseas windsurfing events.
